The DOC and BOP protect our society and the safety of Department personnel by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities while assisting, as appropriate, their re-entry into society.

The risks that corrections professionals are exposed to, even in these controlled environments, is high due to the proximity of working with potentially non-compliant and hostile individuals. This is especially true where the policies of some institutions prevent corrections professionals from even being armed at all. While the degrees of security of many prisons may vary, all prisons have policies in place to respond to deal with situations from non-compliant personnel to cell extraction and prison riots.
